Our Services: The Four R’s
-
Rescue
We seek horses who are in need of our help or serve as a resource for nonprofit organizations and private individuals. Whether the horse is a Mustang who has lost their freedom and needs to feel safe with humans in domestic life,
or is intercepted from the slaughter pipeline, neglect or abuse:
we serve as a soft landing. -
Rehabilitate
Nutrition and medical care are at the core of our program. We strive to heal each horse’s body in conjunction with their minds. Predominantly, we utilize the veterinary services of Alpine Veterinary Hospital in Monte Vista, CO. We feed slow-fed, free-choice grass hay, soaked alfalfa/beet pulp pellets, Triple Crown Ration Balancer, Renew Gold Extruded Fat Nuggets, and Daily Gold by Redmond. Of course, we are happy to alter our feeding regimen to an owner’s specifications if they have a program of their own.
-
Retrain
Our approach to teaching is based upon the principles of science-based horsemanship, applied in a compassionate, kind, and patient manner. Utilizing the equine’s unique neuropsychology, the foundation of our method is coaching the horse in how to find their own source of relaxation — no matter the circumstance. Through confidence building exercises designed to engage curiosity rather than fear, we help the horse learn new skillsets that serve as the foundation for any riding discipline.
-
Rehome
Of course, each horse is a unique individual, and not every horse will be the right fit for every person. We are committed to honesty, for the horse’s sake and their human’s, and require that each potential new home completes an adoption application. We work diligently to assess each horse’s personality, strengths and weaknesses so that we can ensure that they find
the perfect forever home.
Compassionate
Horsemanship
At Second Chance Ranch, we pride ourselves on a compassionate approach to horsemanship and training. We understand that each horse is unique and requires individualized care and attention. We believe in building trust and a strong bond with our equine partners through patient, kind, and curiosity-based techniques. Whether we are working with private client horses in training or rescue animals, we take the time to understand the horse's history, personality, and needs. Our goal is to help each horse find balance, confidence, and trust, ultimately enabling them to be well-rounded and happy individuals. Through our approach, we strive to create a safe and nurturing environment where horses can thrive and find their chance at a fulfilling and purposeful life.
